Dutch and Flemish tv productions nominated for International Emmy Awards

The Dutch public broadcaster has been nominated for an International Emmy Award with two documentaries: Etgar Keret, based on a true story and Puck’s World. Flemish production company Shelter is nominee for the tv show Did You Get the Message?

The International Emmy Awards are among the most prestigious awards in television. 44 programs from twenty countries were nominated in eleven categories.

Etgar Keret, based on a true story

Dutch filmmakers Stephane Kaas and Rutger Lemmare are nominated in the arts category for Etgar Keret, based on a true story, aired in Het Uur van de Wolf (Baldr Film/NTR Television). In his short stories, the Israeli writer Etgar Keret mixes fantasy and reality. His own life story also comes across as a modern fairy tale.

His Dutch superfans investigate in their hybrid documentary why storytelling is essential for Keret's survival. They integrate several of his short stories by using animation and reconstruct anecdotes.

Puck’s World

One of the documentary contenders for the Emmy Awards is Puck’s World (KURTA/EO Television). Puck is the severely handicapped daughter of Dutch filmmaker Gert-Jan de Vries. Starting with the pregnancy De Vries films his wife, his sons and his daughter.

Since Puck can’t talk, the family members interview each other about the struggles and the tensions that come with the arrival of Puck. This results in an intimate and frank documentary, showing the impact of having a severely handicapped child in your family, in a period when health-care is heavily under discussion.

Did You Get the Message?

Did You Get the Message? from the Flemish production company Shelter is nominee in the non-scripted entertainment arena.

In this TV show, aired on VTM, comedian Jens Dendoncker gives messages to people in an original and surprising way. The program already won the prize for best new comedy format at the international MipTV TV show in Cannes and a Gold Award at the WorldMediaFestival in Hamburg.

Shelter previously won two Emmy’s for the comedy shows Benidorm Bastards and What If?

The winners of the International Emmy Awards will be announced at a black-tie ceremony on November 19 in New York.
