Taalunie conducts research into the international position of the Dutch language

What influence does Dutch have internationally? What opportunities does the language offer? And what opportunities can be better utilised? De Taalunie (Dutch Language Union) researches the role of Dutch and teaching Dutch outside the language area. The aim is to map the influence of Dutch on scientific, economic and cultural relations. With this message we inform you about the research.

De Taalunie's policy is not only to support Dutch within the language region, but also the Dutch language and Dutch and Flemish culture abroad. With the field research the organisation studies where and how Dutch is present abroad and what added value that presence brings.

Position of Dutch

The research results provide insight into the position of Dutch and into new developments. In this way, the results can help in making choices. The research may show, for example, that there is a need for additional perspectives for education, new activities, or specific support from the Taalunie or others. The results can also provide insight into situations that require extra attention and that may be relevant to (policy) choices.

Working method

The research focuses, besides the position of Dutch Studies abroad, also on Dutch in translations, Dutch in education and science, Dutch in the tourism sector, Dutch in the economy and Dutch and Flemish art and culture abroad.

The research will start in two pilot countries: Italy and Poland. The experiences gained by the Language Union there are used to improve the approach and research and to prepare for research into specific situations in other countries.

The research should be ready before this summer.
