The short film Death of a Shadow (Dood van een schaduw) by Flemish director Tom Van Avermaet has won the prestigious Silver Méliès prize at the Leeds International Film Festival. Van Avermaet dedicated the prize to set photographer Wouter Lismont who was killed last week in a car crash.
The 20-minute film tells the story of a dead soldier from the First World War trapped in a limbo between life and death and forced to collect shadows in order to get another chance to live. The cast includes Matthias Schoenaerts (Loft, Bullhead) and Laura Verlinden (Ben X).
The film was screened as part of the Belgian Short Film Panorama. It will be shown next year at the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival where the coveted Méliès d’Or prize is awarded to the best short.
