Flemish director Felix van Groeningen received the Hollywood Breakthrough Director Award for ‘Beautiful Boy’ at the Hollywood Film Awards ceremony. Timothée Chalamet received the Supporting Actor Award. The Hollywood Film Awards form the first big ceremony of the new film season.
The Ghent director won the prize for his English language debut. Earlier he directed ‘The Broken Circle Breakdown’ and ‘De Helaasheid der Dingen’ (The Misfortunates).
Felix van Groeningen received the award from Brad Pitt, who made a rare public appearance. Pitt’s production company produced ‘Beautiful Boy’. He said that the story of the film and the message of unconditional love are desperately needed in these hard times. "When meanness is so loud, what better salve than that of hope?”
The chance that Van Groeningen will soon also be nominated for an Oscar, is rather small - the competition is too big, and at the American box-office ‘Beautiful Boy’ does rather modest business. The film, which has been distributed by Amazon since 12 October, has now raised just over three million dollars.
‘Beautiful Boy’ focuses on the relationship between a father and a drug addict son played by Timothée Chalamet. Chalamet won for his role the Supporting Actor Award.
‘Beautiful Boy’ premiered at the Toronto Film Festival and hits Belgian box offices on 21 November.
