Belgian Refugees in Britain 1914-1919

(Christophe Declercq) THE LOW COUNTRIES - 2014, № 22, PP. 56-65

When Germany invaded Belgium on 4 August 1914 one out of five Belgians, some 1.5 million, sought refuge abroad (Netherlands, France and the UK). Roughly a quarter of a million Belgians crossed the Channel during the war years. When the war ended in November 1918 the Belgians were not immediately sent back. Over 5.000 stayed in Britain officially.
